RICHARD MAURY (American, 1935 - )
From his perch in Florence, Italy, where he moved as a young man in 1960, American-born Richard Maury has pursued an artistry drenched in traditional painting techniques that has made him something of a solitary – and quietly heroic – figure. As Americans at mid-century exalted art works that prized newness and innovation, Maury has produced an astounding body of work – still lifes, interiors, nudes, portraits – that confounds those who call realist painting passé. He has not been overlooked; Thomas Hoving named Maury as one of a handful of 20th century artists whom he thought connoisseurs a 100 years hence will pronounce American masters.
