Paul Huet
Villa Massimo, Rome
PAUL HUET (French 1803-1869) Huet was one of the little masters of 19th century French landscape painting -- a painter of romantic landscapes and a precursor of both the Barbizon school and the impressionists. This work was done during a two-year sojourn in Italy (1841-1843). Huet’s work can be found in the Louvre, the Orsay, and the Petit Palais in Paris and in numerous other museums throughout France and the United States.

Arthur Clifton Goodwin
The Red Barn
Arthur Clifton Goodwin (American, 1864-1929) Self-taught and enormously talented, Arthur Clifton Goodwin produced a large body of work in oil and pastel that reflected his residence first in Boston, and later in and around New York City. This canvas, depicting the then-rural view across the Hudson along Spuyten Duyvil Creek just north of Manhattan, was exhibited at the Addison Gallery of American Art, at Phillips Academy in Andover, MA, at the first retrospective of Goodwin's work in 1946.

Alfred C. Howland
The Country Mansion
ALFRED C. HOWLAND (American, 1838 – 1909). Howland trained informally in Boston in the 1850’s before traveling to Europe for study at the Dusseldorf Academy and then in Paris. He was a member of the National Academy from 1882. Howland lived in New York City much of his life but summered in Williamstown, MA. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Howland populated his landscapes with lively country character, houses, farm buildings, bridges, fences and other occasional architecture of the countryside. All those characteristics are on display in this work with its elegant country mansion at the center, its several ladies at play on the front law, and the outbuildings along the river or lakeside.

Fred Nichols
Autumn
Fred Nichols (American, 1948 -- ). Fred Nichols trained at the Unversity of Virginia (B.A.), Pratt Institute (M.F.A. 1973) and the Ecoles des Beaux Arts inFontainebleau, France (1969). A contemporary realist, Nichols currently maintains a gallery in Barboursville, Virgina. This painting is a stunning example of the artist's work, here in a very large format. It is also, apparently, representative of Nichols work as a whole and evidence of his success in achieving his stated objectives as an artist. His artist statement notes: "The objective of my art is to recreate the natural world that surrounds and forms us...Through my study of the wilderness, I hope to renew an interest and desire not only to protect, but also appreciate, the natural world. My work is concerned with beauty and the picturesque landscape: the clear, blue day that warms the soul; the waterfall that flows with sound and movement; the peacefulness of an afternoon stream; the colors of a tree changing seasons. The challenge is to present these experiences in a way that engages the viewer....My method is to go into the wilderness and photograph, returning to the studio to paint. Working with the photograph allows me to capture a place, one moment in time, one season at a time. The photograph is the starting point of a search for a new reality..." "I want my art to be positive and uplifting," the artist concludes. "I want it to wake people up to the natural world around them. I want it to give them a respite from the stresses of everyday life." This painting succeeds on all these counts. See also www.frednichols.com

Wellington Jarard Reynolds
Moonrise
Wellington Jarard Reynolds (American, 1869 - 1949). Illinois-born Reynolds studied in Paris and Munich before returning to Chicago at the turn of the century, where he taught and painted for the next 30 years. He exhibited widely in the US and Paris, earning medals along the way, and his works, though rare in the marketplace, can be found in numerous museums and public collections throughout the US. This work reminds one of (and holds up to!) the best Ipswich work of Arthur Wesley Dow in its composition, mood, and color, and is probably contemporaneous with that work.

GEORGE RENOUARD (American, 1885-1954) A graphic artist and painter, Renouard taught at the Art Students League in New York. Alexander Harrison
Path through the Dunes
Thomas Alexander Harrison (American, 1853 -1930)Alexander Harrison's first career was as a topographical draftsman for the U.S. Coastal Survey, following early studies in art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA). By 1879, however, he was studying with Jerome and Bastien-Lepage in Paris, where he soon established his reputation as a leader among American painters there. Harrison remained in France for most of his adult life, exhibiting extensively in Paris. He returned to the States often, however, where he also exhibited extensively (perhaps most so at the PAFA), and where his work found great favor. During his long career, Harrison received numerous exhibition medals on both sides of the Atlantic, and his work can be found in many leading museums. On his death in 1930, the New York Times described Harrison as the "dean of American painters."
